The Difference Between a Hero and a Coward

An incredible story of bravery and heroism exploded on the internet last week. A 16-year-old lifeguard named Ryder Williams fought off 8-10 foot waves and a riptide to save a ten-year-old boy at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California.

The Pacific Ocean was not very placid on July 25^th as hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve near Mexico were creating very hazardous conditions in California. Ryder said he saw the boy wading in ankle-deep water and then suddenly get knocked over by the force of the incoming waves. He immediately called in the emergency on his radio and ran over to the boy with his lifeguard equipment in hand. The boy was apparently unconscious, as Ryder later said that he found him limp in the water.

The next two minutes were nothing less than spectacular as Ryder gave the boy a bear hug and did not let go even as he was knocked down a few times by the raging surf. If you have not seen the video, it is worth a look. Some bystanders tried to help to no avail as they too were buffeted by the waves. These men do get a huge callout for even trying to intervene, but Ryder wisely told them to get back to the safety of the shore so there would not be yet another victim pulled out to sea.

Eventually, Ryder’s lifeguard colleague, Aaron Bohnen, ran over and the two of them were able to pull the boy to safety. After medically assessing the boy and seeing that he was alright, albeit a little shaken up, he was returned to his grateful family.

Since this incident, Ryder has not appeared on any popular news shows. Instead, he simply provided a written statement and a short video through the California State Parks Instagram account. In the written statement, he said, “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely. This is my job, and I love what I do. I’m thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day.”

Someone online commented to this post saying, “No ego. No flex. Just a kid who ran into danger because that’s what he’s trained for. His parents should be incredibly proud.” Indeed.

Juxtapose this tale with an incredible story of pride, ego, vanity, and self-serving behavior which also exploded on the internet last week. It was the release of Anthony Fauci’s Covid-19 diary and his later pathetic testimony before Rand Paul’s Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Fauci made a whiny, weak opening statement with his hands shaking uncontrollably. He claimed he was being personally targeted by Rand Paul and then proceeded to plead the 5^th Amendment 111 times for the remainder of the hearing.

The stark contrast between these two stories could not be any greater. In one, a 16-year-old on the verge of manhood who was not looking for any fame or accolades saw a need. In a split second, he realized the immense responsibility of his position and, without thinking, risked his own life to save another. Ryder Williams is truly an American hero.

Anthony Fauci, on the other hand, is a coward. He repeatedly lied about the origins of Covid-19 due to his agency’s funding of gain of function research; he indorsed remedies like Remdesivir and the RNA clot shot that harmed countless people; he attempted to disgrace and silence other doctors and scientists who disagreed with him; he used the taxpayer’s dime to apply for awards that had huge cash payouts; and he promoted all of the arbitrary pandemic policies that hurt so many both physically and emotionally.

All the while he was writing diary entries about how famous he was becoming, how sexy he looked, how he was revered by celebrities, and how everybody loved him. He did all this as an elderly man (he was 79 years old in 2020), which is quite frankly unbelievable. One would think that advanced age would make a person less superficial, not more.

During the pandemic, Fauci had a chance to save millions, but instead he put his own needs first. His need to protect himself from accountability for breaking the ban on gain-of-function research. His need to be the most famous scientist in the world. His need to be adored by famous people. His need to amass more wealth than he knew what to do with.

Even after Fauci’s shocking exposure, he still seems unrepentant. A heartfelt apology from an 85-year-old man might have helped heal some of the COVID-19 wounds that people are still carrying. Perhaps if Fauci had come to the hearing and admitted his many transgressions and explained why he repeatedly lied to the public, while admitting the truth in private, we could all move on. Apparently, his fear of the repercussions of his actions during the pandemic prevented him from telling the truth. So what did he do? He sat in the hearing mute and shaking.

In a world full of Anthony Faucis – dare to be a Ryder Williams. Give of yourself without counting the costs. Be brave. Be humble. Tell the truth. Do your job. Don’t seek fame for your own sake. This is the way to live if you want to be admired by all. Too bad Anthony Fauci never learned this important lesson.
