The Two-Edged Sword of Freedom

Plenty of people are scratching their heads and wondering how the country that once prided itself on freedom is experiencing so many instances where it is nowhere to be found. Citizens who once had an absolute right to speak whatever they thought are now being challenged by the left and enforced by our government, accusing them of being domestic terrorists if they object to killing babies and exercising their God-given parental rights.

The only way this can happen is when the freedoms we hold so dearly are misused by one side against the other. The real problem and answer are not to limit anyone’s freedom but to convince the masses that misuse is unacceptable in a civilized society by reintroducing a spiritual component to the public square.

Freedoms, once taken for granted, are being taken away as each new crisis appears. The COVID disaster ushered in a new totalitarianism, whereby the citizens were stripped of their civil rights under the justification of “stopping the spread.” Government vaccine mandates, coupled with cooperation from the medical establishment and corporations, ripped away a once-free citizenry of their liberty.

Freedom has always been a fragile right of human beings and has been under attack throughout history. Eighty years ago on Thursday, the country somberly recalled the D-Day invasion when American and Allied troops stormed the shores of northern France to meet the evil of the Third Reich head-on. In twenty-four hours, the death toll rose to over 4400 soldiers. Unfortunately, the dead at Normandy were only a portion of the men and women who would give their lives to ensure that citizens of the United States and other nations could continue to enjoy their freedom back home.

Those young defenders, who advanced under the rain of artillery and bullets, did not differentiate between political parties and collectively fought for freedom in America, the United Kingdom, and Canada. For them, it was a war against good and evil.

It’s odd to think that freedom is a double-edged sword, but it is. For a group of people to continue to live in a self-governing society, they must agree that the freedom to speak and act is as much a right to one as it is to all. But once the contract has been broken, tyranny inevitably takes root.

Accepting the premise that for one to be free, all must be free opens the possibility that some will abuse their freedom and use it as a weapon against their political opponents.  This is precisely what the left has done, using the freedoms they enjoy as citizens to change the environment of this country radically. It is a movement to “transform the country, as Barak Obama so famously predicted after he was elected for the first time.

The left has so skillfully used their rights to take and hold on to power; they have, in essence, used their freedom in the advance of their totalitarianism.  They are using what was previously held dear by citizens and perverting the right to promote evil and chaos.

Patriotic citizens would never deny one of their fellow citizens the right to speak and say whatever they liked. But allowing this (free speech should never be taken away) meant that the likes of Adam Schiff, James Comey, Nancy Pelosi, and others had the right to speak freely about Russia, Russia, Russia. These unscrupulous politicians manipulated their freedom of speech to be purveyors of falsehoods to tamp down conservative thought. This was so harmful because these characters held the power to use their freedom to jail their fellow citizens. Remember those still languishing in prison during the January 6th protest.

The conundrum of freedom is this: without it, people become slaves to the powerful.  But freedom opens up the possibility of what we are experiencing today, the misuse of liberty to enslave those who disagree with leftist and communist ideas.  The answer is not limiting freedom but using the right to fight against those who see it as a tool instead of a right.

The actual conflict boils down to the difference between good and evil.
