The Doctor Behind a Young Man’s Euthanasia

When discussing the slippery slope of disregard for human life, the warning is often dismissed as an overreaction. In a case in Canada, the warning came true.

Canada embraces the concept and practice of euthanasia with legal protection. The willful killing of sick patients is quite alarming and accounts for 1 in 20 deaths in Canada.  Canada is becoming a suicidal country, and the liberality of “mercy” killing called MAID has taken another life under questionable circumstances.

MAID stands for Medical Assistance in Dying, which was enacted in 2016. Without getting too far into the weeds, the law allows the government to take away citizens’ lives if they meet certain criteria. The person has to be over 18 years old, and consent to wanting to end their life and have a grievous and irremediable medical condition, whatever that means.

A 26-year-old patient in Canada met the requirements and was put to death. The background of this young man makes the story stand out. Kiano Vafaeian was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was four years old. At 17, he was involved in a car accident and struggled with his mental health after the incident.

On and off, his mother claimed Kiano would suffer from seasonal depression, and it wouldn’t be until 2022, when he lost one of his eyes, that he became obsessed with MAID. During that same year, a Toronto physician approved him for death, but it was not until a robust social media campaign headed by his parents that the doctor withdrew his approval. Multiple other doctors refused Vafaeian until he found, or was directed to, one: Dr. Ellen Wiebe, a prominent MAID provider.

There is a big question as to whether Vafaeian was coached to make the decision he did. Patriot Fetch reports, “The role of Dr. Ellen Wiebe, who approved Vafaeian’s euthanasia, has come under fire. Allegations suggest she coached him on how to qualify under “Track 2,” which does not require that a patient’s death be imminent.”

Wiebe, a 72-year-old doctor, is reported to have assisted over 400 patients in dying. Calling Wiebe a physician is generous because she is more of an executioner than a healer. In 2022, she reported to the parliament that she assisted in killing 430 ill patients through euthanasia. But terminally ill patients aren’t the only people she has a hand in killing.

Wiebe also runs an abortion clinic in Vancouver, and the number of deaths of the unborn is unknown. The death-loving physician rationalizes her hand in the destruction of human life. She refuses to call her actions euthanasia because she thinks that term only applies to animals. For her, assisted dying seems to let her sleep at night.

Unapologetically, she talks about killing ill patients.” In many ways its akin to her abortion work. It’s about honoring people’s wishes, empowering people to have control over their own lives. It’s wonderful that I have the opportunity to do that.

When Vafaeian came in contact with Wiebe, it was a foregone conclusion that she would approve and assist him in killing himself.  Wiebe is often quoted as saying that her work to end adult lives is in response to what she calls unbearable suffering.

You hardly call Vafaeian having unbearable suffering when he was seasonally depressed. His problem could have been easily handled with therapy and drugs, but Weibe took advantage of his vulnerable state and aided in the death of a 26-year-old man who shouldn’t have died.  Are you surprised, coming from a woman who has no qualms about killing the vulnerable unborn, too, and calling it empowering?

The people of Canada need to revisit the MAID law and rescind it. The slippery slope of euthanasia in that country will only get more treacherous.
