Jn 6:41-51

“Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;
this is the bread that comes down from heaven
so that one may eat it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

Every one eats manna, it is the food provided by God Almighty the world needs on a daily basis to sustain physical life. But in the end, everyone dies no matter how much they consume or what quality they ingest. The fact is airtight and is used by many as the proof they need to disbelieve in the reality of eternal life.

Those poor souls who cannot wrap their minds around the gift of eternity make one major flaw in their reasoning.  True, physical life is fleeting and the experience of death is universal. However, the physical body of human beings is only half of the reality of what it means to be a human being.  Normal food and nutrition have nothing to do whatsoever with the spiritual aspects, which is the other half of what is proper to all human beings.

The virtue a human being while on earth is never enhanced by an apple eaten for lunch. True love is not sustained by any earthly means, but given a life through other means. In essence, all of the spiritual aspects of a person are buttressed by something other worldly. Whether a person is aware of it consciously or not, the spiritual life has a foundation built upon the gratuitous gift of Almighty God who sustains that life each and every day by his grace.

The Bread of Life is not ordinary food, a small consecrated host affords little or no nutritional value. What is offered is not meant for cell division, but meant for the continuation of a human being’s existence which is not a temporal one. Human existence is far grander than the world, for we have already proved the physical body dies off. The existence we are referring to must be something more. The more, is a life which no longer demands food in the ordinary sense, but a desire to eat a food which provides for spiritual sustenance necessary for a human life to continue throughout eternity. The Bread of Life is exactly the food needed to accomplish need. It provides a foretaste of what our true home will be, eternal life in communion with God.

The saints who are already in heaven have no need of material food, nothing they need for a journey, they have already reached their ultimate promise, life with God each and every moment. The Bread of Life offers the taste of the eternity the saints enjoy, urging Christians to be peaceful with hope of all of us will join them in time.  Our Communion with God through the holy bread, continuously transforms the partaker to set his sights on a life not of this world, but a life where the truest form of existence can be a reality. That is heaven.

The Bread of Life taken and eaten also reveals the true source of our existence like nothing ever can and shows us we are nothing without communion with God. Once hidden, now all becomes clear. Jesus sustains and enhances all which is good in us, and it is only through the good a human existence can be made eternal.
