The ousting of Joe Biden, posted to X this Sunday, has revealed the new democrat strategy to retain the power of the White House. Obama, Pelosi, and Schumer knew full well that Biden was basically unelectable, given his mental and physical challenges. There have been credible reports that Biden had a medical crisis in Las Vegas while campaigning there, and he was kept from public view until Tuesday. Exactly who runs the country and controls the nuclear football is certainly a question worth asking, but that is not the focus of this post.
As of today, it certainly looks like the Democratic nominee for president will be Kamala Harris. As a radical socialist, Harris has an abysmal record on every conservative value, most notably pro-life issues. Harris has used her position as the vice president to conduct a “Reproductive Freedom Tour” this year in response to the Roe v. Wade decision and has proposed federal protections that would limit individual states from any restrictions on abortions. She is a hard-core feminist and is the first president or vice president in history to visit an abortion clinic. In March of this year, she made a stop at a Planned Parenthood in Minnesota to spout her anti-life rhetoric. Clearly, she will use this volatile issue to drive a huge wedge between the populace and court women voters.
And this is why it is incumbent on all Catholics and Christians who value the sanctity of life to vote for Donald Trump and J.D. Vance – despite the fact that the current RNC platform has been moderated on this issue. By removing a federal ban on abortion that was included in former platforms and by also endorsing in vitro fertilization (IVF), the Republicans have put this issue squarely where the majority of the country currently resides.
In an interview with NBC News, J.D. Vance was also quoted as saying he supports the Supreme Court’s recent decision to allow access to the abortion pill, mifepristone. We shouldn’t be surprised by these strategic decisions as they are purely political in nature and not morally motivated. Trump and Vance are aware that they will need to secure each and every single independent and moderate voter to win this election.
The pro-life wing of the republican party, including more than one hundred pro-life organizations, were outraged by the changes and issued a letter to the RNC before their convention urging them to restore the former verbiage that had once been a mainstay plank of the platform. Many others have come out against Vance’s comments about mifepristone.
With all due respect to these organizations that have been advocating for life for years, they are asking for someone else to do the heavy lifting and take the hard stance on life issues at the expense of possibly losing the election. For whatever reason (left-wing propaganda, poor catechesis, lack of leadership in the church), too many Americans still believe that abortion is a “woman’s right” and are not yet at the point where they will agree to abolish it completely.
The hard truth is that these 100+ pro-life organizations have not done enough to move the needle by changing the hearts and minds of everyday Americans. When Roe was overturned in 2022, pro-life groups should have then pivoted to work exclusively in the states where this issue would inevitably play out. Instead, they were flatfooted and, in many cases, have been outsmarted and outspent in state referendums. Recent elections that codified abortion within the state constitutions, like Kansas and Ohio, are examples of these tragic failures.
GMC has always and will remain unapologetically pro-life. However, to expect the presidential nominee and his running mate to bear the full responsibility for life issues in a secular election is unrealistic. Our bishops and church leaders are not willing to speak out – why should we expect a presidential candidate to do so?
Peachy Keenan (a conservative Catholic on Substack) wrote an excellent piece about this very topic entitled Victory Remains Fragile – My Fellow Prolife Conservatives: Please Stop Drilling Holes in the Life Boat. In her essay, she argues, “The transforming of human hearts is the job of the apostles, not politicians. Sorry the Church totally failed you, but blaming a political party seems like scapegoating. You should be mad at your religious authorities, not a political party.” Peachy, we wholeheartedly agree.
In response to the new RNC platform, some uber-scrupulous Catholics and Christians are now saying that they won’t vote as some kind of protest. Peachy also points out the lunacy of this position, stating, “If the people angry at the “GOP Platform” refuse to vote for Trump because he won’t support a new federal ban, then YOU will be the authors of a coast-to-coast abortion free-for-all—and the final surrender of the country to open-borders lunatics.”
There is much at stake in this election. If Harris or some other Democrat wins, we are looking at the destruction of the country as we know it and the end of personal and religious freedoms. Do not let your myopic view and your own holier-than-thou pride, “I’m way too Catholic or Christian and principled to support someone like Trump or Vance,” cloud your reason. God uses imperfect instruments, meaning all of us, to bring about His kingdom on earth.
Get out and vote for Trump and encourage others to do the same. Then take some personal responsibility for ending abortion, like talking with your family, donating to a pro-life organization, volunteering at a crisis pregnancy center, or praying in front of an abortion clinic instead of waiting for a politician to do the hard work for you. This is the only way we will finally end the scourge of abortion in our country.
