At Least Some Accountability

first time in American history, the Speaker of the House was ousted

On Tuesday, October 3rd, Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position as Speaker of the House in a 216-210 bipartisan vote.  McCarthy served the shortest term since 1876 with not even a full year under his belt. He made it clear that he will not run for speaker again.

In an impromptu press conference outside the capitol after the vote, Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the author of the resolution to vacate the speaker’s chair, said the following, “It is to the benefit of this country that we have a better speaker of the house than Kevin McCarthy. Kevin McCarthy couldn’t keep his word. He made an agreement in January regarding the way Washington would work, and he violated that agreement.”

This is about an agreement that McCarthy made and summarily broke with a group of fiscally conservative representatives seeking to change the way Washington, D.C., operates. As you may recall, it took 15 votes over a two-day period in January for McCarthy to get elected as Speaker. To garner the votes of the America First holdouts, McCarthy promised the following: Single subject spending bills; a 72-hour period to read the bills before voting; a guarantee that any bill that spends more than 100 million dollars may be subject to amendment; no continuing resolutions or omnibus bills that lump various controversial topics into one Yea or Nay vote (ex. border security and aide for Ukraine); and no secret side deals made with lobbyists or democrats.  McCarthy failed with the passage of a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown last week and brokered a supposed secret deal with the White House to provide more funding for Ukraine.

McCarthy appears not a man of his word. He is the quintessential politician who says exactly what people want to hear to get elected and then conveniently forgets those promises. While outlining the GOP’s “Commitment to America,” McCarthy said all the right things like, “What the commitment is, is a plan. A plan for a new direction. On that very first day we are sworn in, you’ll see it all changes.”  Sadly, nothing has changed since McCarthy was the speaker, and the swamp continues to protect its own interests.

In addition, McCarthy and his team have not served a single subpoena to Hunter Biden. He has not gotten to the bottom of the Wuhan Lab leak, the bribes made to Joe Biden and his family, or done anything to secure the border. We are all still waiting for the release of the complete January 6th tapes.  The few hearings he has allowed were performative – enough to try to keep the MAGA base satisfied, but not substantive enough to effect any serious change. In a word, McCarthy is a swamp creature and the leader of the uni-party. Matt Gaetz agrees, stating, “Kevin McCarthy is a feature of the swamp. He has risen to power by collecting special interest money and redistributing that money in exchange for favors.”

In a press conference, after he was removed, McCarthy bemoaned the fact that Nancy Pelosi deceived him when she told him that she and her ilk would have his back if the fiscal conservatives came after him. On Pelosi’s orders, every single one of the Democratic representatives voted to oust him. It appears what goes around comes around. That’s what happens when you make a deal with the devil.

What is puzzling about this whole affair is how mainstream so-called conservative commentators and Republicans have responded to this development. There are calls for Gaetz to be removed from the republican conference. Many conservative heavyweights like Newt Gingrich and Mark Levin have openly expressed their displeasure. Clearly, removing McCarthy was a huge blow to the RHINO establishment.

The American people, who are suffering from runaway inflation and ever-increasing interest rates, are sick and tired of these political games in Washington, D.C. Gaetz agrees and states on the floor of the house, “Washington must change. We have to break the fever. We have to break the cycle. I make no apologies for defending the right of every hard-working American to afford a decent life for themselves and their families.”

The bright spot is that, finally, someone in the government is being held accountable for lying, deceiving, and not serving the interests of the American people. Now let’s do the rest of the RINOs, the Marxist democrats, and while we’re at it, fire Merrick Garland, Christopher Wray, Alejandro Mayorkas, and Joe Biden.
