On July 14th Associate Supreme Court Justices, Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan, testified before Congress to ask for a $220 million budget appropriation for the Supreme Court expenses for next year. According to Kagan, the majority of those funds will be spent on increased security precautions for the justices.
Barrett, who has aged poorly and looked more haggard and worried than she did just five years ago, made an impassioned plea about security concerns for both herself and her large family. She spoke of death threats, swatting incidents, and fake packages sent in the name of Daniel Anderl (the son of slain federal Judge Esther Salas). “The threat level is really high,” she lamented. This was especially true after the Dobbs case was leaked and the court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. Crazed leftists vowed to get even and threatened all the justices who voted for its repeal.
Barrett later went on to tell the committee about her security detail giving her a bulletproof vest to wear. She retold the story of her 12-year-old son seeing it at home and not knowing what to say to him. With a pained look on her face and fighting back tears, she moaned, “And I didn’t know how to respond because maybe I lack imagination, but I didn’t expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one.”
It goes without saying that we do not condone any public figure, regardless of ideology, facing swatting incidents, death threats, or physical violence. We also sympathize with her situation and hope she will remain safe. Unfortunately, many of the hardcore leftists feel that killing someone who disagrees with you is totally justified. But this is beside the point.
What Barrett could have said to her son is that there are evil people in the world who do not agree with her that killing an innocent baby in the womb is wrong. She could have told him that she might get hurt doing what is right and just, but that is a chance she is willing to take. She could have said that if something ever happened to her, she hopes her son would know she loves him and would be very proud of her for standing up for the truth. And as a Catholic, she could have told him about the sacrifices one makes for their faith.
But that kind of response would take courage – something that Barrett sorely lacks. To be fair, most mothers of nine would lack this kind of courage, as her thoughts are more about the safety of herself and her family than faithfully interpreting the Constitution. She is probably in constant fear that one of her children may be targeted as well.
Roscoe Smith IV recently posted this revealing tell on X analyzing Barrett’s voting record since the Dobbs leak, which was featured on Patrick Bet- David’s podcast,
“Before Dobbs, she [Barrett] voted with the conservative position 81% of non-unanimous cases. Since then, that number has dropped sharply into the 50-60% range in subsequent terms – including major cases involving birthright citizenship, election procedures, and administrative power, where she has sided with Chief Justice Roberts and the liberals.
The Dobbs leak triggered violent threats and protests aimed directly at Supreme Court justices. If the threat of violence and intimidation can move a justice’s votes on foundational issues, we have a constitutional crisis on our hands. Judicial independence is not optional – it is the foundation of the rule of law. When justices appear to bend under pressure, public trust collapses and the entire system is at risk.”
If it is true that Barrett’s rulings have been greatly influenced by the threats she is receiving, it proves that left-wing terrorism is effective. And if this goes unchecked, it will only breed more violence in the future. Rule #1 when dealing with terrorists is to never give in to their demands.
During the committee hearing, Barrett also said that on average she only has 4-8 security staff at any given time and that the cabinet members have 20. Does she really think that more law enforcement will help squash her fears and ease her anxiety? The Supreme Court is a lifetime appointment, and being only 54 years old, Barrett has to face another 20-30 years of these threats.
It is well past time that Amy Coney Barrett not simply ask for an increased security presence, but resign her post immediately. She has proven to be unfit to serve at this time of turmoil and leftist violence. She doesn’t have the mettle to withstand the threats and she admitted as much when she said that she was not aware that serving on the Supreme Court would be this tough. The violent leftists now can see the fear in her eyes and are going to continue to target her if she attempts to step out of line.
If she swallows her pride and resigns now, everyone would totally understand. The public assassinations of Brian Thompson (CEO of United Healthcare) and Charlie Kirk have shaken up most people. We all realize the that the risks are real.
But if she decides to continue on the Court and votes half of the time solely to appease the leftists and keep them off her case, Barrett’s legacy will be marked by her unbridled fear and failure to speak the truth. The victims of this scenario will no longer be Barrett and her family, but the American people who will be bound by her capitulation and poor decisions.
