Heartless Fellow Citizens

The Texas Flood Tragedy Used for Political Gain

It took only a few hours after the news broke about the tragic flooding in Texas for political ghouls on the left to make highly inappropriate and insensitive statements about the carnage and destruction.  To date, 110 people have died due to this disaster, including many children, and 170 are still unaccounted for.

Case in point, a pediatrician from the Houston area named Dr. Christina Propst, who posted the following on Facebook:

“May all visitors, children, non-MAGA voters and pets be safe and dry. Kerr County MAGA voted to gut FEMA. They deny climate change. May they get what they voted for. Bless their hearts.”

How politically rigid and hard-hearted does one have to be to make a statement such as this? Propst wishes death to anyone who voted against her preferred candidate and ideological party. She published this statement while many Texas parents were grieving the loss of their daughters from Camp Mystic, and other families in the Texas Hill Country were still searching for loved ones. And her final barb, ‘Bless their hearts,’ is cruel and mocking. To their credit, Propst’s employer, Blue Fish Pediatrics, fired her and issued a statement condemning her despicable post.

On the surface, Propst is a successful, highly educated, and seemingly normal-looking woman. If you pass her on the street, you might not notice anything remarkable about her. She could be anyone—an office worker, a bank teller, a preschool school teacher, or a mom. Yet she has exhibited incredible insensitivity because she has been fashioned in a political climate that knows no sympathy, celebrates the loss of life, and assigns blame where it does not belong.

Catastrophically, the Guadalupe River rose from 7 feet to 29 feet in just two hours. Rainfall totaled 10 to 15 inches from late Thursday to early Friday morning, and an estimated 1.8 trillion gallons of rain fell. The flash flood also occurred in the wee hours of the morning between 1:00 am and 5:00 am. National Weather Service alerts went out on cell phones; however, many of the affected areas did not have adequate cell coverage. Unfortunately, these factors converged, making this disaster nearly impossible to predict and/or mitigate. To tell victims that they got what they deserved because of whom they ‘voted’ for ignores the facts.

However, Propst is not alone in her condemnation. Enter Sade Perkins, a former Houston mayoral appointee. Perkins recorded a video saying the following on a TikTok post:

“I know I’m going to get cancelled for this, but Camp Mystic is a white-only girls’ Christian camp. They don’t even have a token Asian. They don’t have a token Black person. It’s an all-white, white-only conservative Christian camp. If this were a group of Hispanic girls out there, this would not be getting this type of coverage that they’re getting, no one would give an [f] and all these white people, the parents of these little girls would be saying things like ‘they need to be deported, they shouldn’t have been here in the first place’ and yada yada, yada.”

This statement is blatantly racist as well as false. Maybe Perkins forgot about the shooting at the school in Uvalde, TX, a few years ago. Many victims had surnames like Torres, Lopez, Rodriguez, Ramirez, and Garcia. This story did indeed receive national coverage, and we all mourned the loss of life of these precious, innocent children, whether they were illegal aliens or not.

The left and their twisted ideology have turned these women and many others into monsters willing to use a tragic disaster to score some ridiculous political points. Their vitriol, division, and hatred are palpable. It is frightening that our fellow citizens, who may not vote as we do, think that we deserve to die.

How shall we as Christians respond to this rhetoric? We need to continue to pray, first of all, for the victims and their families.  The loss of a child is a heartbreak that no one should have to endure. We also need to pray for our country that we may unite and find some common ground. Lastly, pray for these misguided people who have exploited this situation. May the grace of God soften their hearts.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
