The notion of the image of God comes directly from Scared Scripture in the Book of Genesis. Human beings are created in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). Male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27). The two verses from the first book of the bible indicate human beings are created differently than all other created beings. Human beings by sharing God’s image and likeness possess an eternal quality which has often been understood as having an immortal soul. Human beings created as male and female indicates there are two separate incarnations of the same humanity. In other words, two different ways of being human, male and female, but yet one shared humanity.
